Registered users of eGems Collector Pro 1.x versions
should read the following notes before installing the trial version of
Collector 2.6.
eGems Collector 2.6 and 1.x will not run on
the same computer at the same time. In addition, 2.6 gem collections
cannot be opened by the 1.x version of the software. Installing version
2.6 usually involves upgrading any previously installed 1.x versions.
This should not deter version 1.x users from trying 2.6, however several
extra steps should be taken to ensure that users may return to their
older version, should they wish to.
Backing up version 1.x data files
After installing version 2.6, should you open any 1.x data files, you
will be prompted to perform a one-time conversion of the file to 2.6 format,
Collector 1.x cannot read this format, however, during the conversion
a backup of the 1.x format will be made. The file will have the extension
'.gm1' and be located in the same directory as the original data file.
To be cautious, version 1.x users should consider copying all their version
1.x '.gmd' files to a safe location on their hard disk, prior to trying
version 2.6.
Installing version 2.6
When completing the installation wizard, you will be prompted to create
a backup directory for all files replaced during the installation. Make
sure you answer 'Yes' to create this backup.
Running version 2.6 for the first time
Most users have elected to have Collector always open the last data file
used. In this event, version 2.6 will automatically detect that a version
1.x file is being opened, and will prompt the user to convert it. Remember,
during this conversion, a backup of the old file will be made with a '.gm1'
file extension.
Returning to the previous version
We're certain that, after trying the new features in Collector 2.6,
your next stop will be our e-commence site to purchase your upgrade.
However, should you desire to return to your previous version for any
reason, that can be accomplished in one of two ways.
If you have not installed any other software
since installing version 2.6, you may restore your 1.x version automatically:
- Elect to uninstall version 2.6 by using the add/remove control panel
applet, or the uninstall option from the eGems Collector Start Menu group.
- Select an automatic uninstall.
- Select 'Yes' to perform a rollback.
- You will have to delete any converted version 2.6 data files, and
then restore your version 1.x files by copying them from their backup
location, or by renaming the automatic backups from '.gm1' to '.gmd'.
If you have installed other software
since trying Collector 2.6, or the above process fails for some reason,
you must restore Collector 1.x manually.
- Make SURE you have located and backed up ALL your version 1.x data
files.
- Elect to uninstall version 2.6 by using the add/remove control panel
applet, or the uninstall option from the eGems Collector Start Menu group.
- Select an automatic uninstall.
- Select 'No' DO NOT perform a rollback.
- Reinstall eGems Collector Pro 1.x from your original installation
media.
- Restore your data files from their backup locations created in step
1.
