1.0 Known Issues
Windows XP style user interface theme causes minor
display problems.
Description:
Windows XP theme causes the bottom edge of some
eGems windows to appear cut off. The lower edge of 3D effects and decorative
boundary lines appear to run off the edge of the window interior and
become obscured by the thicker window borders of the XP windows theme.
Workaround:
Users who prefer the classic windows theme may
set Windows XP to display the more traditional user interface of Windows
Me or 2000. Users who prefer the new look of XP will note that all functionality
of eGems Collector is preserved, and the effects noted above are cosmetic
problems only.
Status:
Better support for new Windows XP themes will be
included in a future release of the product.
Gems containing only images cannot be dragged into
Micrososft Powerpoint from the tree view.
Description:
With the release of version 2.6, individual gems
are stored in a new format. This format, while very supportive of a
wide range of word-processor software, is not interpretted correctly
by Powerpoint. Instead, Powerpoint accepts only the formatted text of
gems dragged or copied from the tree view, discarding any image data.
Workaround:
To insert an individual image into a Powerpoinr
slide, first open the gem containing the desired image. Within the gem
editor window, click the image to select it, then use the 'copy' option
from the Edit menu or toolbar. In the current Powerpoint slide, select
the 'paste' menu option or toolbar button.
Status:
Improved support for Powerpoint will be included
in a future release of the product.
Difficult to select and copy individual images displayed
in the gem editor window.
Description:
When a gem contains image data, it is sometimes
difficult to select the image within the gem editor window such that
the 'copy' menu option or toolbar button becomes enabled. This happens
frequently when the image is right-clicked in an attempt to display
the context menu.
Workaround:
When the copying of an individual image within
a gem is desired, first select the image by clicking it with the primary
mouse button, then use the toolbar or Edit menu to copy the item. If
the image is clicked first with the alternate mouse button, it may be
necessary to click the image twice with the primary mouse button in
order to re-enable the copy option.
Status:
This problem will be addressed in a future release
of the product.
Cannot drag gem containing tabular data from tree
view to MS Excel.
Description:
Gems dragged from tree view onto excel are treated
as plain text. Excel does not properly interpret gems dragged directly
from Gem View.
Workaround:
It is possible to move tabular gem data into an
Excel spreadsheet. The process, however, is not quite as intuitive as
most of eGems drag and drop features. Open the desired gem and use the
mouse to highlight the table within the gem that you want to move to
Excel. This can be all or part of a table. Right click the selected
area and select the 'Copy' menu item (note: the 'Copy Entire Gem' option
does NOT work for this purpose). Go to the desired Excel spreadsheet
and select a single cell that will be the upper left cell of the copied
table, then select 'Paste' from Excel's menu, or by pressing CTRL-V.
Status:
Better support for tabular data is planned for
a future release of the product. Note that gems do not capture formulas
in Excel cells and such support is currently not planned.
Display garbled after collecting large amounts data
from web page.
Description:
The gem editor does not implement every possible
formatting option supported by modern web browsers. Java scripts, DHTML
and deeply nested tables will frequently cause gems created from a large
amount of web data to be displayed improperly.
Workaround:
When creating gems, superior results and more usable
gems can be achieved by selecting less 'extraneous' data. For example
if you are interested in the text of an article, select just the article,
and avoid any headers, tables-of-contents and other navigational structures
that may appear with it on the page.
Status:
Improved support for arbitrary web page data will
be included in a future release of the product.
Certain symbols contained in document appear as odd
characters when made into a gem.
Description:
Documents containing certain special symbols are
not reflected properly in gems created from the document. This is caused
by an issue in processing Windows HTML clipboard format that is in part
due to Windows itself. At this time, eGems Collector only supports Western
alphabets.
Workaround:
ALogic is working actively to resolve this issue.
If you encounter a symbol that does not translate properly when you
create a gem, please report it to md@egems.com.
Status:
Better symbol support for will be included in a
future release of the product.
Printing a gem from the gem editor window always
uses default printer.
Description:
When printing gems from the gem editor window using
the 'print' or 'print preview' options, the print is always sent to
the default printer defined in Windows. There is no way to send printed
gems to an alternate printer from within eGems Collector.
Workaround:
Using the 'printers' option from the Windows Control
Panel, manually set the desired printer destination as the current windows
default printer prior to printing gems from the gem editor.
Status:
Better printer support for will be included in
a future release of the product.
Double clicking a Gem collection launches WinAmp.
Description:
If you have WinAmp and eGems installed on that
same system WinAmp may try to open your Gem collections when you double
click a collection to open it. This is because WinAmp recognizes the
.gmd extension that is used for Gem collections.
Workaround:
Right-clicking the Gem collection allows you to
select the option "Open with". From this menu select "Choose Program..."
and select eGems from the window (if eGems is not displayed you'll have
to select "Other..." and navigate to the eGems directory). Once you
have selected eGems to open your Gem collection check the box that sets
eGems as the default application.
